When I got married, I had this second-hand scooter – Kinetic Honda – which looked cool and sporty. I never liked geared bikes for some reason, unlike other boys or men, and preferred an automatic scooter as it was more convenient to start, ride, and get to your destination without any hassle. Mileage was an issue, for me though, it was all about convenience over maintenance.
As is normal when you are young, you tend to drive fast and furiously, navigating the traffic through zips and slides. It may seem fun to some and dangerous to many. During those days, helmets were not compulsory and hence it was cool to ride without helmets without worrying about injuries, etc.
I think we had this for almost 6 months or less before we bought another new one Honda Activa (Black) because this one had become rusty, making a lot of noise, and building a small smokescreen sometimes.
We used to drive around during the weekends as she wanted to go out and have fun with me. Some of our time together away from home. Sometimes it would be a joyful ride for her and sometimes it might result in real angst and pain for her. The latter case would be mostly when there is a traffic snarl and if I am hungry or in the mood to reach home, then I would drive fast cruising through the traffic as if I were an invisible person without thinking about the person sitting behind. Vidya being tall like me with long legs would invariably sprawl outside and when I drive crazy close to the vehicles her legs might get hit. No amount of sorry would be enough because the damage is done, and she also would not say much worrying it might provoke me on the wrong side. Thus, a fun evening ends up being a wretched one on some occasions.
That’s how we started to explore the city of Chennai. Every weekend we would choose a particular part of the city to drive around, explore, and return home. There’s no better way to get to know the city than to drive around in a two-wheeler and walk around the place. It was a fun ride before we moved on to the next scooter – Honda Activa. One of the reasons was that this one got discontinued and there was not much production or maintenance of this brand of scooter in the marketplace.
She would invariably hug me tight from behind not caring a hoot about who was watching us on the road or not. I must say, I loved it and I would let her slide her arms around me so that she could lean on me and we would fly to another world in our minds lighting a fire of romance while the rubber scorched the tar roads.
