What they undergo to protect our nation is just incomparable to anything else in my opinion. Especially, those who are at the forefront safeguarding our borders from enemy and terrorist infiltration. They have to toil hard in the harshest of conditions in terms of facilities, climate apart from several other hostile circumstances they have to face off to keep the country and us insulated from any danger.

I am neither from an army family nor do I have any experience of working with army, naval or airforce people. However, since childhood I was enamored by soldiers fighting for the country. Their heroism and supreme sacrifice of life, without batting an eyelid for their country and comrades, triggered a set of emotions within the heart that is indescribable. These acts of valor not only sends goosebumps in me but also a feeling of love, compassion and diehard fervor and pride for our soldiers.

You really hold them in a high esteem, for they possess certain traits which is lacking among most common men. These are loyalty to the country, integrity and dependability, fearless courage and indomitable spirit, duty that emanates as undying love for the country, compassion for the compatriot, trust in comrades, honor and selfless sacrifice above all, discipline to obey and accept the orders even if they know the mission is suicidal in nature, skill and fitness to survive in the most arduous conditions, perseverance, patience and ability to remain calm even in stressful situations, reliability to hold on to secrets even when they are captured by the enemy, never say die attitude and to fight till the end….even with bare hands….the list can be endless….

How many of us do possess even some of these attributes. It is remarkable that we expect so much out of our soldiers who actually are paid much less than most of us working in a Corporate or Government sector in comfortable conditions. I am not denigrating the work done by us or anyone else. It is just that our soldiers need to be taken care of for the quantum of sacrifice they are expected as part of their work, which is actually not work but much more than that. In our stream of work, we do not have to put our lives at risk. That is the essential difference between us and them. And for that, are they compensated enough is my question.

There are countless war heroes who have laid their lives protecting the country from invaders, enemies, traitors and terrorists. We are obligated to salute and honor them in every possible manner. We need to remember them in our daily prayers for they made a supreme and eternal sacrifice for the country and us. Most of us cannot even dream about doing that….in reality….and that is the truth…I wish and pray for their wellbeing on this occasion of 75th Independence day from the depths of my heart….and hope and aspire to do something for them before I lose my breath. That is the least I can do for these immortal warriors…true sons and daughters of the land who stand tall above all and beyond the mountains, soaring high above the skies….they are the ultimate Gods who have descended earth to protect us.

My salutes and pranams to each and every soldier who has served, serving and will serve this nation.
