This is an important topic for discussion. Social media thrives on acceptance and acknowledgment of your post’s. In other words how many “Likes” your post has garnered or how many followers you have is an important bearing with respect to your social status. It’s the barometer of your position amongst friends, family and many unknowns. Lack of it can cause severe anxiety and depression amongst people, especially teenagers and young adults who seek attention and feel the need for acknowledgement. If their posts are not liked or worse they are trolled, it’s a real nightmare for these young one’s and they don’t take recourse within the family. They feel that they are ostracized from their society while they are truly loved at home. Social media makes them believe that they represent their world. The reality truly is at home where they belong, loved and cared for without any expectations in return. What was private and intimate has become an open door invitation to the whole world to see what is happening in your life. Okay there are privacy settings but people who throng social media want more and more of everyone and everything, not less. Rejection of our ideas, thoughts, photos etc. causes mayhem mentally as the mind is not tuned for rejection. The main reason is today’s generation is brought up with most of their wants fulfilled in some way or the other. Even if the parents suffer financially, they still seek loans and credits to provide whatever their wards want. Thus the kids feel privileged and expect that at every moment they would be recognized, appreciated, whatever they do even if it’s really insignificant. That’s the main reason why they end up with suicidal instincts when they face the real world. It’s harsh, brutal and non forgiving. Thus it’s important for us to teach our kids to have self esteem and self belief in what they do and what they can do. No matter what others say or talk about you, they should know that they are capable of doing something inherently. If you don’t believe in your self nobody else will.
