Celebrations and Nightmares

19th June 2010

Today was the farewell and birthday celebration of Vikram and Varshini, Son and Daughter of Suresh and Ranjini. The haunt was the Jungle in Salmiya. Timing was 12 noon and we reached there by quarter to twelve. As usual, it was a marathon effort to feed Anirud and we were delayed.

Vidya wanted to go to studio for a photo shoot as per plan. She decided to wear sari for this occasion and as usual, it took enormous amount of time before she was ready.  But then she did look quite gorgeous and beautiful. Son wore new pair of clothes and also wore his new blue shoes which we had picked up at Steps yesterday when we went for the movie Ravanan. He was dashing and stylish sporting his new mushroom cut, which did come out as planned. Nevertheless, the boy was just debonair and cute. When I asked her if we were to go to the studio as planned, she said she did not want to go in a sari. Not sure why? I wore my new tees and we left to Jungle.

After the initial gathering, welcome drinks and starters, it was time for games. The first game was musical chair for the kids. Since they play music, I had left Anirud on the stage so that he can also go around with other kids dancing to the sound of music. But strangely this time, he also got into the chair, we really don’t know if he knew the game, or he was just observing others and following the pattern. But it was such a fun that he almost beat most of the kids quite elder to him quite unknowingly. It was ignorance, innocence and playful mirth at its best to watch him move around with other kids in the stage.

Then he started moving around with other kids and finally once all games were over, it was time for cake cutting at 2 PM. It was a well designed cake made at La Sable and had the photo of Vikram and Varshini embedded on it. It was time for lunch and the spread was generous and good. Finally it was time to end the show with a game of bingo. I was feeding Anirud with noodles and he fell asleep in my lap. I was feeling quite tired and sleepy too as we had watched a night show the previous day and I worked on until 6.30 AM in the morning.

We returned home at around 4 PM and I fell asleep. In the evening we went to City centre for weekend purchases of grocery and other items. Vidya had asked me to buy baked corn and give it to Anirud. Somehow this guy liked it very much and kept eating it without great fuss. He had also asked for Almarai flavored milk and Vidya gave it to him. Eventually he had vomited the same.

Once we reached home it was time for dinner and Mami made dosas for us and rice flour for Anirud. This guy made a mess of it and when Mami was trying to take away the hand towel which had become wet, he cried, threw a big tantrum and vomited everything. I was also in a fit of rage as he was so adamant for the towel which was wet with his vomit. But then eventually he reconciled with mom and became quite only when we gave the hand towel which was washed and kept in the bathroom.  Then she put him off to sleep as I was quite angry and he dared not to come near me. Now who was right or wrong in the whole scheme of things I do not know, but everyone lost their patience and were adamant about their own thing. Vidya wanted to feed him, Anirud did not want to eat and was finicky about the wet towel and once mom and son became intolerable, I lost my temper. I don’t know why these things always happen over the weekend strangely. Normally kids do not remember such instances and I dearly hope that my son forgets this episode and moves on.

Life’s like that is it not.
